Hurricane Audra--Part 1
The little town was quiet at night
reverently still and peaceful,
unaware of the brewing storm
looming and deceitful.
Out on the barricading ocean,
over the shores that confined,
a new wall was arising
with one thing on its mind.
Foreboding dark clouds thickened,
blanketing the city in despair
trapping sun’s light and warmth
in nature’s ominous snare.
Impervious fog descended
and darkness settled in.
While everything turned black,
The cyclone forms its skin.
A mighty gale rose up,
ripping the sturdiest bonds to the sky
tearing apart the little town
with a powerful mourning cry.
The storm clutched its surroundings tightly
inside an unbreakable grip
As raindrops slowly descended
with a rhythmic
drip.
Drip.
Drip.
Lightning struck an illuminating bolt
revealing monstrous fears
a town in desolation
a lonely soul in tears.
The typhoon marched through town
leaving destruction in its wake.
Houses, buildings, lives,
there was nothing it wouldn’t take.
As the storm’s ferocity surged
trees bowed to its dictatorship.
Gentle drops morphed to unrestrained floods.
drip drip drip drip drip drip drip
Like tears they fell
from the eye of the storm.
Unpredicted and destructive,
from those tears a tempest took form
While the city slept in silence,
thunder roared in anger and pain
Audra’s cyclone had arrived,
a passionately fierce hurricane.

This piece is the first of four in a multi-genre project. Please look for the next piece, Hurricane Audra--Part 2, a short story. The poem sets the stage for the all of the pieces as it introduces the storm and hints at how it is a reflection of grief.
