Today I'm as happy as can be
That you've come from Florida to be here with me
All movies and board games we play together
And the brunches, also late lunches I will always treasure
Now with all my love please come start the fun
Grandma Sandy come light candle number 1

Each house you moved to brought more experiences
All cars you had with great differences
But through changes of background we still had good times
Hanging with you both, just read between the lines
Sleepover at your houses with the dogs as I got older
Is what I love the most, it brings us much closer
Two special people we must call up to see
Grammy and Grampy light candle number 2 with me

This one family is so near and dear to my heart
The boys taught me how to be so street smart
From Erik teaching me “pound it” when I was little and “what’s up homey”
I cannot stop laughing you are all just too funny
When Bill used to pick me up and let me dangle from a leg
I would yell for Paula and ask to go organize her closet, I would beg
Even though Stephen moved from crazy town to the west coast
The adventures and parties he shows us on Instagram are worth all the boast.
Now, Paula, Bill, Stephen, and Erik as crazy as you can be
Dance on up here and help me light candle number 3

All of our phone calls that seem to go on forever
I love to listen about both of your lives together
Your November wedding at the beach a few years ago was so nice
I really wanted to go for a swim but the ocean felt like ice
Getting ready with the bridesmaids, doing our makeup and hair
Are some of the memories we will always share
Uncle EJ and Aunt Stacy join me on the dance floor
So you can help me light candle number 4

Although you all live far away in Florida and NYC
You are an important part of my family tree
Whether it’s meeting up at a bagel shop in Boca Raton
Or gathering at an Italian restaurant in New York, your love for me is always known
You have always remembered every birthday that have passed
Which is more than I could have ever asked
Aunt Jodi, Cousins Jay, Marilu, Marlilyn, Lenny, Eden, Jason, and baby Shawn, please dance on up, or even jive to assist me in lighting candle number 5

Uncle David and Aunt Florence, it was great to see you while we were in San Francisco
Now that your back is feeling better Uncle David, I’m expecting some disco
Matt and Tracie, it was fun to be a flower girl as you walked down the aisle
And now there’s cousin Jack. I love to see him smile.
When we came to New York I remember my and Rona’s walk around the lake
We loved watching the birds; it was a wonderful break.
But Uncle Rob’s sombrero… now that really takes the cake.
In this group there is also a sports rivalry between the Yankees and Mets
You know I’m a Yankees fans and I have no regrets.
Uncle David, Aunt Florence, Uncle Rob, Rona, Cousins Matt, Tracie, and Jack… please can we can all just agree to cheer for the New York Knicks?
No matter your answer, can you all come on up and help me light candle 6?

These people practically live in my house
We should all just join forces to make a Jewish Full House.
I call them my second parents, they’ve taught me a great deal
The corny jokes and crazy tales I wish I could steal
Ira, Karen, Rob, Janice, Larry, and Lise dinners with you are never a bore
Come on up and light the lucky candle seven, make sure to dance full out – hardcore

The next four people let me be where I am today
Because without them teaching me, it would just be another birthday
These special women taught me all I know about Hebrew
And they even had to put up with me and my crazy crew.
I love them so much and I cannot thank them enough
These past years were at times – quite tough!
But each individual equipped me with something great
Gwen Sloan, Mindee Trudell, Michele Zuckerman, and Deb Morbeto I need you to light candle 8.

Now most of you today had to take long rides from Pennsylvania to celebrate
And candle number 9 I would like to dedicate
I’m so sorry for being absent
To this years summer encampment
This candle overlaps a ton
But hey! All Hebrew school people, we are officially done!
Now for this group I need Kadima and Hebrew School people
To come light the 9th candle so we can continue our sequel

These next people have taught me a bunch
As we sit and talk every day at lunch
We keep each other up to date
And share the foods from each other’s plate
We talk about people, even some guys
One even may laugh so hard she cries
I’ve known some for years upon years
Others I just met this past year, but I’ve seen the tears
I can tell them anything, or talk about our teachers
As we watch the guys play basketball from the bleachers
All my Farmwell friends, we fight now and then,
But today I need them to come and light candle 10.

4 people I was going to joke about for the next rhyme
But really they are just my partners in crime
We love each other anyone can bet on it
As we scroll through rom-coms all on Netflix
From Marshall to Lilly, The Mother and Robin
We sew each other together like a bobbin
Who is the winner team quokka or Efron?
The boys are back with Nutella oh it’s on!
The fabulous five I give them all high 10’s
But this candle is number 11 so I can only ask my bestest friends
All I can request is for Mia, Julia, Hana, and Adina without blue lipstick
To come and light the fire, you are the ones I pick

Sometimes I'm rude and I get on his case
But no one could ever take his special place
He sticks up for me and cheers me up when I'm down
That's only one of the reasons I like having him around
Ryan, I love you, you are quite hilarious too
So come light this 12th candle from me to you

There are two people more special than all the rest
And just who they are, I am sure you can guess
All through my years they have had my back
Even if it was just to pick me up a snack
While they keep teaching me how to behave and react
They later relax with a little tickle attack
13 years they have been stuck with me
I can’t believe how far we have come, trust me it was not as easy as 1, 2, 3
Dance on up here we know you can put on a big show
Mom and Dad, please join me so we can let this last candle glow.

The author's comments:

This piece is a tradition for a Jewish woman to write when she has her Bat Mitzvah. At the age of 13, I had a bat mitzvah a "becoming a Jewish Woman" party and wrote these poems to have my friends and family come up and light 13 candles, each representing a year of my life.
