Where I'm From
I am from giant bunny bread,
from Charmin Ultra Soft, and Welch’s juice.
I am from the balloons and streamers that stay months after a birthday.
(Bright, dusty,
It felt homey.)
I am from the devil’s ivy,
The fake banana tree
whose each rip and tear holds a memory
I’m from the holiday sweet potatoes with marshmallows
and always filming each occasion.
from Debbie and Fabiola and Ida Mae
I’m from the forgetful of other relatives birthdays
And the always late ones
From the “Be careful!” and “it’s 9:30 go to bed!”
I’m from Our God is an Awesome God
and my glow-in-the-dark rosary
I’m from "the Dell", George and Sandra’s trees,
black beans, and stroganof
From the broken right inner ear of my dad
and my mom’s trip to an electrical plant
In the dresser was a shoe box
holding pictures from a time long ago.
Each picture grows close to each other
like a lawn of grass soft under my feet.
I want to stay, roll around until I’m green,
but I know I will soon have to water other plants
I am from those experiences that made me who I am,
a lawn that I will never mow
