Once upon a time…. A typical fairy tale beginning that leads to typical fairy tale ending. This is not one of those times. There aren’t any dragons, old witches, damsels in distress, or handsome and charming princes. There is only Keri, an ordinary girl in high school trying to navigate through this thing called life. She liked the typical things that any girl likes: movies, music, boys, you know, the usual. But she always wished she had the power to read minds.
One day, while walking home, it happened. Lightening struck down from the sky and, for a brief moment, touched her head. She was struck by lightning. I know, crazy, right? I couldn’t believe it myself. Keri woke up in a hospital with the worst headache imagined. She kept hearing these voices. She tried telling these people to shut up but there weren’t many people around. Keri soon then realized that she could hear the thoughts of the people around her . She channeled her energy and focused on one person’s thoughts. The thoughts of the nurse assigned to her neighbor blasted through my mind in high-definition. She kept chanting over and over, You can do this, Sarah. You can do this. Keri began to freak out and she knew her life would never be the same.
The next day Keri got out of the hospital and went to her best friend’s apartment with the terrifying yet intriguing news. “Hey, what are you doing here? I thought you were in the hospital,”said Kaden.
“Yeah. I just got out but I needed to talk to someone,” Keri replied.
Keri proceeded to tell him about the last twenty-four hours and how she could read people’s thoughts. He started laughing so hard he couldn’t breath and he began to choke on his own spit. Keri just sat there. She knew he would do this. Then, he stopped and thought, She always cooks up these crazy ideas. Maybe its time for an intervention…
Keri screamed and told him she didn’t need an intervention and this time she was serious. This is real and if he didn’t believe her then she would find a friend that would. After her rant, she ran out of the house and drove home. Her family wasn’t there so she just sat in her room staring at the wall.
How could he do this to me? I thought he was my best friend. He promised that he would be always be there and when I need him the most he isn’t there, Keri thought as tears streamed down her brown face.
For the next week, Keri wandered around the small town she lived in and listened to people’s thoughts. Some thoughts creeped her out. I wonder how those heels look on my feet!, thought a man running past a women’s shoe store. Others intrigued her : Where do these people go? I really want to follow them someday. said a teenager strolling down Main Street.
Keri sat down on a park bench watching the sunset when she was approached by a man in a suit. She got nervous so she got up to walk away. Then, she saw another man with a similar suit. Keri then knew they were after her so she continued to walk until she could start running. She ran so fast she couldn’t tell where she was going. Then, she ran straight into what seemed like a brick wall. She flew back and landed on her butt. I am going to be sore in the morning., she thought. As soon as she started to get up a dark bag was placed on her head and she was picked up and thrown into a vehicle. Keri started to scream but everything went black.
She woke up inside a bright room. The walls were so white and there was only a shiny metal table and a metal chair. Keri tried to stand but then realized she was strapped to the matching chair. Keri began to scream. “HELP ME!!!! GET ME OUT OF HERE!!!! PLEASE, ANYONE! HELP ME!” Her screaming got quieter and quieter before the tears started. She couldn’t believe she had been kidnapped. Keri started to think about how horrible the last few weeks had been for her. This has been the worst couple weeks. First, I was struck by lightning. Then, I lost my best friend and now I am locked up in this room.
Her crying eventually stopped when she had no more tears and a headache began. Hours later, after sitting in the room, two large men dressed in black came into the room. One untied her while the other stood there making sure she didn’t do anything crazy. She was dragged out of the room by the two men. Their faces were emotionless and there hands were coarse and cold on her sore arms. She struggled to get used to the grip they held on her arms. They drug her so quickly through the hallways that she practically had whiplash from trying to take in the surroundings. They got to a giant wooden door with weird markings. One of the two men, really tall about 6’5” with a buzz cut and dark, menacing eyes, knocked on the door in a secret code. “KNOCK KNOCK knock knock”
The doors opened and they walked in. There was a man sitting in this giant chair almost like a throne. He stood and she could see how tall he was. He was about the same height as the two men. He had brown hair the color of caramel and paleish skin. He wore dark clothing and his eyes were dark like the night sky. He was a handsome man but Keri knew he was the reason she was here. As soon as she was about to ask why she was here, there was a large explosion and once again darkness came over her.
