August 2022 Fiction Contest: Tonight My Fears Win
The cold metal table scratches my back. I try to get up, but find I can’t move a muscle. I blink a few times, disoriented. I open my mouth to test my voice, when a faceless head appears directly above me. It’s a whirl of shadows, a velvety void woven in darkness. I’m screaming, shrieking, but not a sound comes out. More figures materialize, like a huddle of surgeons stooping over an unconscious patient. Breathe, I tell myself. Just wake up. So I try. And find I can’t. My mind is blank by the time the figures bear down on me.
