That disastrous summer when my dad passed away

I remember my heart
That pain you left me
That winter’s night back home in Kentucky
When you pulled that trigger
And ended it all
I remember your red cedar box
That your mom and dad chose
That they left closed
When I walked in the room
Because they knew, it was too hard
I remember your last goodbye
That very last night
That time you held me so tight
When I whispered, “I love you” for the very last time
And you didn’t smile
